In a battle of few versus many, Nir Yitzhak's standby squad repelled the attack of the terrorists, but the kibbutz suffered severe losses - five residents were murdered and eight abducted to Gaza. Five hostages returned - some in a deal and others in a military operation

Upon hearing the Red Color alarm, kibbutz members enter the safe rooms. Throughout the kibbutz, echoes of numerous explosions are heard, apparently from mortars fired by the terrorists.
Ravshatz (Military Ongoing Security Coordinator) Yaron Shahar instructs the 11 members of the security squad to turn on their two-way radios, put on their vests, and go out in pairs to scan the kibbutz. Residents are asked to stay in their safe rooms. The attempts of the members of the security squad to call for help from the IDF are not answered. IDF forces at the nearby Sufa outpost are under heavy attack and are having difficulty reaching the kibbutz. However, according to the IDF investigation, the decision of the force commander at the outpost, Major Roey Chapell, to send a tank to the fence area significantly reduced the number of terrorists who reached Nir Yitzhak and Kibbutz Sufa. Chappell himself was killed during the fighting in the outpost area

The terrorists set fire to plastic cylinders from the “Polysack” factory near the entrance to the kibbutz. Terrorists break into and loot the “Chemada” factory, the workers hide and manage to survive.
Oren Goldin, who lives near the entrance to the kibbutz, sees the billowing smoke near the gate and decides to scan the area. Seven terrorists infiltrate the kibbutz. Goldin fights them until he is killed. At 07:45 the terrorists leave the scene

Twenty five more terrorists arrive at the kibbutz gate in pickup trucks and motorcycles. Two members of the security squad await them at the gate - the squad commander, Tal Haimi, and his deputy, Lior Rudaeff. A battle develops between the sides, during which the terrorists throw grenades. The battle lasts about 20 minutes. Rudaeff and Haimi are injured but continue to fight
The Ravshatz and other members of the security squad, along with two residents of the kibbutz, arrive at the gate to assist in the battle against the terrorists, who are armed with RPG launchers and grenades. After about half an hour of fierce fighting, the terrorists are driven back. During the battle, the Ravshatz, Yaron Shahar, the commander of the alert squad, Tal Haimi, and his deputy, Lior Rudaeff, are killed. The remaining members of the alert squad retreat slightly to the kibbutz' houses and continue trying to call for help

About fifty terrorists from the Gaza Strip enter the kibbutz. They break into the residents' homes, steal property, burn houses, and cause widespread destruction, while the residents hide in the safe rooms. In addition, they kidnap the bodies of Tal Haimi, Lior Rudaeff, and Oren Goldin

The members of the security squad realize that they are surrounded by terrorists and decide to barricade themselves in one of the houses to set up a situation room and call for help. They manage to contact the Southern Brigade, which tries to send troops to the kibbutz, but they are delayed due to the many ambushes on the access roads.
Terrorists break into the Marman family home. The kibbutz cameras records the kidnapping of five family members: Clara Marman, Luis Har, Fernando Marman, Gabriela Leimberg, and her 17-year-old daughter Mia. They are led from the kibbutz gate in a van towards Rafah
Two security squad members encounter three terrorists who entered the residence of "volunteer year" teens who were not home that Saturday. Members of the security squad fire at them and they flee.
After the last of the terrorists left the kibbutz, the first security forces arrive - teams from the Counter-Terrorism Unit - and begin searching
After a 14-hour stay in the safe rooms, kibbutz members are allowed to leave and asked to gather in the fortified kindergartens. There, they are guarded by defense forces until evacuations from the kibbutz begin.
