Sahar and Idan Baruch hid for hours in the safe room while terrorists burned down their house. When they felt they could no longer breathe, they went out the window. Idan was murdered, while Sahar was abducted to Gaza. About three months after the massacre, the IDF announced that Sahar had been killed during a military operation to liberate him.

When the attack begins, brothers Sahar (25) and Idan (20), a regular service soldier, are in their mother's house in the Kibbutz. They were both there by themselves.
Before the two brothers reach the safe room, terrorists throw grenades and fire into the house. As a result, Idan is wounded by shrapnel.
The two fail to lock the safe room door and they block the doorway with a cabinet. They are constantly in telephone contact with their family members. Sahar sends his mother, a nurse by profession, photos of Idan's injury to guide him remotely on how to treat him.
The terrorists start a fire in the house and the heat and smoke begin to penetrate the safe room.
At noon, when the heat and suffocation become impossible, the two decide to jump out of the safe room' window and hide behind the bushes near their house. Their mother warns them not to go out, but they are determined not to die in the fire. Idan comes out first. Sahar lingers, presumably to get his brother an inhaler he needs. At this point the two get split. The terrorists seize Idan and murder him. A short time later they capture Sahar as well and kidnap him to the Gaza strip.
In the same hours, in another house in the Kibbutz, Hamas terrorists murder the grandmother of the two, 81-year-old Geula Bachar.

The family receives notification of the identification of Idan's body. He was buried on 22.10 in the military plot at the cemetery in Beeri. He was posthumously promoted to corporal.

For about three weeks, Sahar is defined as missing. At one point, intelligence information is received, indicating that he is alive and kidnapped in the Gaza Strip.
