On the morning of October 7th, dozens of terrorists arrived in the neighborhood and went house by house abducting and massacring young people. They threw four grenades at the apartment of Neta and Irene. Neta fell on one of the grenades and saved Irene's life.

Neta and Irene's bedroom is located in the safe room, so at the time of the alarms they woke up but stayed in their bed
The couple hears the sounds of gunfire non-stop inside the kibbutz grounds
Neta's family informs him that his grandmother, 81-year-old Bilha Epstein, was killed by gunfire from Hamas terrorists in the kibbutz. Irene described the moments after the announcement: “There was crying. It was difficult.”
Neta also hears about the murder of his uncle, Ofir Libstein, head of the Sha'ar Hanegev Regional Council, who was murdered by terrorists. Irene retrospectively described the moments after the announcement: “There was a collapse”
Realizing that they might be next, Neta leaves the safe room and brings a glass bottle, deodorant, a cigarette lighter, and a kitchen knife to defend against the terrorists in any way possible. Neta tells Irene: 'We will fight with what we have'
After breaking in and massacring their neighbors, the couple hear the terrorists breaking into their home as they break the windows of the kitchen and living room. Neta sends his last message on WhatsApp: “Dad, there are here.” The terrorists open the door of the safe room and throw two grenades. Irene suffers burns to her legs
The terrorists throw a third grenade at Irene. Neta shouts “Grenade!" and falls on the grenade to save Irene's life. As he falls on the grenade, the terrorists fire bursts at him.
The terrorists throw a fourth grenade into the safe room, which starts to burn. Irene informs Neta's father that the terrorists murdered his son and that a a fire has broken out in the safe room. Irene covers her face so as not to inhale smoke. At this time, the terrorists remain in the living room of the house, shouting, arguing and opening the refrigerator without knowing that Irene is still alive in the safe room and hears everything
Irene hears that the terrorists are leaving the house and she leaves the safe room that is on fire and sends farewell messages to her parents: “I love you, thank you for everything.” Irene's mother encourages her to fight for her life: “He didn't die in vain. He died so that you could live.” Irene, in response, extinguishes the fire in the safe room and goes back to hiding behind Neta's body under the bed in the safe room
The terrorists go in and out of the house several times. The terrorists fought IDF soldiers from inside the house and fired at neighbors’ apartments. All while Irene concealed herself next to Neta's body
IDF soldiers arrive at the house and extricate Irene under fire. She is one of the first to be evacuated from the kibbutz
Neta Epstein is laid to rest at the cemetery in Kibbutz Einat
