About an hour after the attack on Kfar Aza began, terrorists stormed Yahav Winner and Shai-Lee Atari’s home. Yahav held them off while Shai-Lee fled with their one-month-old daughter, Shaya. Yahav was murdered, while Shai-Lee and Shaya hid in a shed for hours before finding refuge with neighbors who saved them

On 6 October, the funeral of Laurian Enrico Navon, Yahav Winner's grandfather, took place at the cemetery in Kibbutz Kfar Aza. During the service, Yahav, a 37-year-old filmmaker, delivered a eulogy, saying, "We will meet again in heaven." The following day, as red alerts blared, Yahav, his wife—34-year-old singer and creator Shai-Lee Atari—and their one-month-old daughter, Shaya, take shelter in their home's safe room. Seven years earlier, Shai-Lee was in a car accident, and since then, she has used a cane for walking support

Hearing gunfire outside, Yahav suspects terrorists had infiltrated the kibbutz. He messages his friends, asking, "What is this gunfire?" A few minutes later, one replies, "They're shooting outside my house."
Yahav spots terrorists outside his home and begins recording them. All the while, he presses against the safe room door, while Shai-Lee holds Shaya in her arms
The terrorists force open the safe room's window shutter and attempt to break in. Yahav struggles to hold them back, exchanging a final glance with Shai-Lee. At that moment, she understands what she must do—she grabs Shaya and runs away. At first, the two hide behind bushes outside the house. Soon after, they move to a neighbor’s laundry room, a small wooden shed. There, they crouch behind a washing machine, concealed beneath pots and sacks of fertilizer. Desperate to protect her daughter, Shai-Lee finds a hammer and grips it tightly for self-defense

The terrorists break into the house through the safe room window and set the room on fire. Yahav manages to escape to an inner room, locking the door behind him. To keep the smoke from spreading, he places a wet towel under the door and barricades it with Shaya’s stroller. Moments later, the terrorists force their way in and murder him

Michal, Yahav's mother, and Liron HaCohen, his sister-in-law, desperately try to reach him, but their attempts are in vain
After nearly two hours of hiding, Shaya begins to cry. Hearing terrorists approaching, Shai-Lee quickly flees with her to another location. They reach the home of their kibbutz neighbours, Liron and Zoli Mor, the uncles of Abigail Idan. Spotting Shai-Lee and Shaya on their security camera, Liron and Zoli immediately open the door for them. Once inside, Shai-Lee calls Yahav’s father, Ofer, to update him on what had happened. Meanwhile, Liron and Zoli’s children gently comfort Shaya

As the hours go by without a response from Yahav, his sister-in-law calls Soroka Hospital in Beersheba. A nurse answers and informs her that Yahav has been admitted to the emergency room. Liron quickly updates Yahav's mother, but about an hour and a half later, they discover the information is incorrect
In the evening, a fire breaks out in the neighboring house to Liron and Zoli's, and the smoke seeps into their home, making it difficult for Shaya to breathe. Meanwhile, Yahav’s sister, Daniel Winner, arrives at a police station to provide details about him
Security forces arrive at the house, rescuing Shai-Lee, Shaya, and the Mor family. They evacuate them to a gas station outside the kibbutz. Shaya, still struggling to breathe due to the smoke inhalation, requires medical attention. Uri Atari, Shai-Lee’s brother and a combatant in the security forces, arrives at the station and transports Shai-Lee and Shaya in a military vehicle to Netivot. From there, an ambulance takes them to Soroka Hospital
Family members search hospital records across Israel in an effort to locate Yahav, but without success. Meanwhile, Shai-Lee and Shaya are released from the hospital and travel to Shai-Lee's mother’s home in Rishon LeZion
Kibbutz resident Nira Shpak arrives at Shai-Lee and Yahav’s home, where she discovers Yahav’s lifeless body. She immediately informs the family, confirming that he has been murdered
Shai-Lee waits for the official identification of Yahav’s body, hoping to have his semen preserved. Once the identification is confirmed, she arranges for his body to be transferred to the hospital. However, doctors informed her that too much time had passed, making the procedure no longer possible
Shai-Lee and Shaya move in with the Winner family in an apartment in Herzliya
Yahav is laid to rest in the cemetery at Kibbutz Srigim
About a year before the attack, Yahav directed a film about his childhood. Titled "The Child", it follows a father and son living in a kibbutz near the Gaza Strip, each finding their way to cope with the relentless rocket barrages fired from Gaza. In September 2024, "The Child" was named Best Short Film at the Ophir Awards. Shai-Lee took the stage to accept the honor on Yahav’s behalf
