Parents Moshe and Sarit, their five children, and over 15 trainees and mentors from an association that helps children with disabilities were in the house on Oct 7. The family quickly divided roles: Amitai, the medic, went to treat the wounded, while Father Moshe and his son Eliad went to fight the terrorists.

On holiday, the Ohayon family hosted about ten trainees and mentors from the “Line for Life” association at their home, where family member Eliad volunteers. When the alarms go off, about 15 members of the house and their guests are huddled in the family safe room. In light of the continuing alarms, seven other trainees and mentors join the family safe room.

The father of the family, Moshe, and his sons Eliad and Amitai go outside and realize that terrorists are shooting in the streets of the city. Moshe and Eliad ran towards the nearby shelter, broke into it, and let the neighbors in. Moshe instructs the neighbors on how to lock the shelter from the inside for fear of terrorists breaking in. The neighbors try to persuade Moshe and his sons to enter the shelter with them, but they refuse. Amitai, who served as a combat medic, went to the street to provide aid to the wounded.
Moshe and Eliad decided to leave with the vehicle towards the fighting zone. Yair, the brother, went outside to join them, but Aliad asked him to return home to guard the association's trainees. Eliad drove, and Moshe held a gun
During the drive, a terrorist stands in front of the father and son's car. The terrorist was able to fire one bullet before his weapon was jammed, and Moshe shot him dead. One of the neighbors will say that Moshe's shooting saved his life
Moshe and Eliad stop the vehicle and hide in the courtyard next to the Bilya family home, where terrorists entered. The two had only one weapon, so Eliad was unarmed.

Moshe notices the terrorists barricading themselves in the house and shoots at them. One of the terrorists entered the courtyard of the house and fired at Moshe. There is a brief fight between the two until Moshe is hit by gunfire and killed.
Eliad reports the gunfire hurt his father. He tries to care for his father, but he is immediately afterward hit by gunfire from terrorists who were staying on one of the nearby rooftops.
Amitai, the medic, who is unaware of the deaths of his father and brother, continues to evacuate the wounded from the city towards Gilat Junction and Soroka Hospital.
A few hours have passed since contact with them was lost. Mother Sarit reports her husband and son as missing.
During the afternoon, Amitai departs to the area where the fighting occurred. He notices the family car and finds the flip-flops that Eliad wore. Amitai gets an overview from residents of the street about the battles that were fought in the area the day before
After three days of uncertainty, Eliad's body is located
Five days later, Moshe's body is also found
